Mark Campbell
Mark
Campbell's vision of the Virginias has been shaped by a lifetime
of travel and
education in the region. Mark lived in the Shenandoah
Valley of
Virginia in his youth. His travels through the states as a collector
of traditional
music have given him a broad view of the landforms and
people living
in this beautiful area.
While studying
architecture at The University of Virginia during the
1970s, Mark
learned perspective, life drawing and color theory. He
also
briefly studied painting at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Mark’s
painting is shaped by his work as an Architectural renderer.
He brings a
keen knowledge of perspective and light to the natural
and man-made
environment with a touch of Hopper and a hint of
Impressionism. His joy is the creation of a playground for light,
usually
employing water as a medium of transparency and reflectivity.
While
lecturing at the University of Virginia, the great architect
Lou Khan
looked into the eyes of young Mark and said
"But...light
is the most important thing." Mark paints the light.
